Birth is a doozy.
You don't need another checklist. You need someone in your corner. I'm Sam. I'm your doula.
WHAT IS A DOULA?
A doula is a trained, non-medical professional who provides continuous physical, emotional, and informational support before, during, and after birth. Not a replacement for your partner, doctor or midwife.

Advocate
Your nurse just suggested Pitocin and your partner is looking at you like what do we do? I help you slow down, ask the right questions, and make sure your preferences are actually heard.

Translator
Your provider says "favorable cervix" and "expectant management." I make sure you understand what that means for you, in plain language, no jargon, no agenda.

Navigator
You're 7cm and they're recommending breaking your water. Decisions happen fast in that room. I help you weigh your options in real time so you're never making them alone.

Steady Presence
It's 3am, labor stalled, and everyone's tired. I'm not scared. I'm not leaving. I'm not selling you a birth that doesn't exist. I'm the calm in the room when you need it most.
Beyond the Birth Room: Care Navigation
Sometimes the complexity starts long before labor. Or long after.
I've spent years building a network of trusted providers so you don't have to Google at midnight. When what you need is outside my scope, I know exactly who to call. NICU-experienced doulas, trauma-aware pelvic floor therapists, grief support specialists, and providers experienced with LGBTQ+ families. Finding the right care is part of the work.
MISCONCEPTIONS
Still don't know what a doula does? Maybe reading through these misconceptions can help.
Doulas are NOT clinicians. Midwives and doctors provide medical care. Doulas provide continuous emotional, physical, and informational support. Different roles. Same goal in supporting families.
Most doulas work in hospitals, birth centers, and at home. We support families through inductions, epidurals, cesareans, VBACs, unmedicated births. All kinds of births.
Many doula clients choose epidurals. Support isn't about proving anything. It's about helping people feel informed and supported in their choices.
Good doulas support partners too. Sometimes we support partners more than the laboring person. Birth is easier when everyone in the room has support.
The best doulas collaborate with medical teams and honor all birth choices. Whether hospital, home, medicated, unmedicated, or VBAC, our goal is communication, advocacy, and support. Dogmatic approaches aren't our style. We help families to feel supported, informed, and respected.
Most doulas support families before, during, and after birth: birth preparation, labor support, and postpartum care.
Doula clients include first-time parents, experienced parents, doctors, teachers, artists, and corporate professionals. Support is universal.
A doula's role is the opposite. We provide information, help families weigh options, and honor their choices. Whether you want an epidural, cesarean, or completely unmedicated birth, we guide without judgment.
Great doulas train, practice, and continue learning. It's skilled, thoughtful work. Any doula who says they are the EXPERT doesn't show a growth mentality. I leave my ego at the door and constantly check my biases.
Vibes matter... but research shows continuous labor support improves outcomes and experiences. Doulas are intentional, informed, and deeply supportive, not just "good energy."
WHO IS SAM?
I came to this work because I believe most people deserve far better than what they're currently getting, and because showing up for people during the moments that reshape them is the only work that has ever felt worth doing.
I'm not a guru. I don't have a method to sell you or a birth philosophy to push. What I have is training, experience, a network I've built over years, and a genuine commitment to showing up for you without an agenda.
I work with people across the full spectrum of birth: hospital and home, epidural and unmedicated, first babies and fourth ones, couples and solo parents. Whatever your situation, you get the same quality of care.

HOW I WORK
Evidence-Based & Anti-Dogmatic
I help you understand your actual options without steering you toward any particular outcome. Your birth, your choices. I'm here to make sure they're truly informed ones.
Trauma-Informed Care
Not because you've disclosed a history, but because everyone deserves care that honors their autonomy. Your yes matters. Your no matters. You stay in control.
Deep Referral Network
I may not have everything you need, but I will help you find it. My network includes providers experienced with NICU journeys, pregnancy loss, trauma support, and LGBTQ+ families navigating a system that wasn't built with them in mind. When something falls outside my scope, finding the right person for you is still part of my job.
Systems-Aware
Black and Brown birthing people face real, life-threatening barriers in healthcare. I'm not going to pretend those realities don't exist, and I won't ask you to justify yourself before I believe you.
HOW WE CAN WORK TOGETHER
Not sure what fits? Every situation is different. Let's figure it out together.
Let's ChatWHAT CLIENTS SAY
A friend introduced us to Sam when I was 32 weeks because we had just moved to a new state and my partner and I were overwhelmed with how to adjust our entire birth plan to our new living situation. We thought we would need an in-person doula, but after meeting Sam, we agreed that her deep knowledge and genuine care were exactly what we needed from a doula and decided to continue with her virtual support. It was the best decision we could have made, because Sam was an invaluable support person from the start. She personalized her approach to fit our needs and worries and preferences, while also making sure to be the grounding voice during our first-time-parent-panic moments. Sam answered every question with patience and kindness, and she never glossed over or dismissed anything. She was consistently available and we could depend on her so easily that it felt like she was with us daily. Even now, 2 weeks postpartum, my husband still references her advice, words, and the information she shared with us. Since the first day of working with her, "what did Sam say?" or "have we asked Sam?" or "Sam said…" have been said every day in our house. Her support and guidance went above and beyond our expectations of what a doula could provide, and we felt so safe and calm every time we interacted with her.
I had no idea what to expect when it came to childbirth until we took Sam’s class. She broke everything down in such a clear, approachable way and helped us feel way more prepared for what was coming. I left that class thinking, “Okay, we’ve got this.” During labor, Sam was an incredible resource. We were texting throughout the process, and she was calmly walking me through what was happening, what to expect next, and even what questions to ask. I can’t say enough good things. Sam played such an important role in the birth of our daughter.
We had such a wonderful experience working with Sam as our doula. From the very beginning, she provided us with a thoughtful and informative birth education course and prenatals custom tailored to my partner and I’s needs… and that really helped us feel prepared and confident about the journey ahead. Throughout my pregnancy, she was available 24/7 to answer questions, hop on the phone… and help me uncoil from spiraling. We are so grateful for her guidance and highly recommend her to anyone looking for a compassionate, funny and empowering doula.
Sam’s childbirth education class was incredibly helpful. She explained everything clearly and thoroughly, which made the entire process feel less overwhelming. She is warm, supportive, and truly passionate about what she does!
Working with Sam was such a positive experience — she brings a calm, uplifting energy that makes you feel immediately supported. She took the time to understand our preferences and equipped us with the knowledge and tools that helped us to have a positive birth experience. Sam was reliable and attentive, checking in regularly and answering all of our questions with care. We truly cannot imagine having gone through this experience without her by our side.
Sam’s class was a total game changer for us! My husband and I weren’t sure what to expect when it came to labor and delivery. We left feeling so much more confident and connected! Sam completely shifted the way we think about birth — it went from something we avoided to something we felt confident about. She also gave my husband really practical ways to support me during labor which made a huge difference. Couldn’t recommend this class more!!!!
The things I didn’t know I needed to know! Great value.
COMMON QUESTIONS
Virtual support happens over phone, video, and text: consistent guidance and someone to think things through with, no geographic limits. In-person means I'm physically with you through labor and birth. Both include prenatal planning; the difference is presence in the room.
Yes. I take a limited number of in-person births each year. A free call is the best place to start. We'll see if my availability lines up with your due date and whether we're a good fit.
I don't bill insurance directly, but many clients use HSA or FSA funds, or submit for reimbursement. I'll provide whatever documentation you need to support that process.
Yes. The class is built for couples. Bring them.
Hospital classes cover the basics in a group setting with limited time. This is different: your specific questions, your specific situation, at your pace.
It's often where the most valuable support happens. You can reach me between sessions with questions, worries, or things that feel urgent. Most clients find that access more useful than they expected.
That's exactly what the free call is for. You don't need to come prepared.
